The power and importance of the indie market for PlayStation

Indian – or independent – games are becoming more and more popular in the gaming universe. Who better to say this than Shuhei Yoshida, once president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios and now head of the Japanese giant’s Indies Initiative. Voxel spoke with Yoshida to get a better understanding of Playstation’s moment in relation to independent games and how he understands the difference between working with big AAA releases and games with big budgets and productions.

How does it feel to step out of the script of working with hundreds of major AAA games and into independent productions?

Shuhei Yoshida: AAA games are great to work on, amazing titles with hundreds of people involved in the process that took three, four, five, even eight years, full of production and a lot of work is amazing, but it’s a very slow process, it takes a lot of patience.

But indie games have a lot of developers who have done hundreds of great things, and sometimes games take five years, six years to make. But with so many developers doing different things, it’s nice to know that I can always look for something new, and I’m always talking to all of these developers about their work.

These people who make indie games are always so happy and excited to share games in development, and what I love most about working with indie is getting to understand where the game is going and giving feedback to the developer.

Developers are always so focused on their work that seeing the game every day makes them wonder what people will think when they try their game for the first time.

Sometimes devs can feel like they don’t understand their game the way they should, so I can give them feedback from an outside perspective. But the big difference for AAA is the amount. The number of games and the variety of games created by independent developers, I can have fun every day of the year.

How does Playstation work with developers from different countries?

Shuhei Yoshida: Of course, more games are produced by developers in the US or Europe. But I like to see games and development from other countries because sometimes these games have a developer culture.

Last example, I’m looking forward to the upcoming game from Indonesia. This is a beautiful adventure game based on Indonesian cities. Culture, music and food all come into play and I fell in love with it, I really enjoyed that aspect.

As with games developed in Brazil, developers can use the country’s history, for example, as a background for the game’s narrative, popular music, which is very different here in the global industry. So we really want to see games created outside of the mainstream market.

What can we as consumers expect from PlayStation regarding the future of indie games?

Shuhei Yoshida: With the availability of tools like Unity and Unreal, game development has become much easier. Developers can simply download and start making games.

Even solo developers can make amazing games. I’m a big fan of Inscryption, a game created by a single person living in Canada. This game had a huge impact on the entire industry. It could be made by someone living in Brazil, right? So every year we see more and more games being created and published, so we want that on PlayStation as well.

We’ve always tried to make it easier for developers to create and publish games on PlayStation, so they can focus on creating their masterpieces, and we want to take as much hassle out of bringing more games to our consoles as possible. This is our real goal.
