The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned doctors that both sexually transmitted diseases can be similar to STIs, and that both people should be screened for STIs.
CDC Director Rochelle Valenski said some patients with monkeys also had syphilis, herpes, gonorrhea or chlamydia infections. The rash that characterizes monkeys may be similar to herpes or syphilis, Valensky said.
“Monkeys need to know that smallpox can be similar to some sexually transmitted infections and can be mistaken for other diagnoses,” Valensky told reporters on Friday. Patients with symptoms of all sexually transmitted infections should also be evaluated for smallpox, he said.
“Healthcare professionals should not rule out monkey disease just because a patient has a different diagnosis or another STI,” Valensky told reporters.
According to the CDC, as of Thursday, the United States had confirmed smallpox in 45 states and Washington. No casualties were reported. The current epidemic is unusual because the virus has been spreading outside of West and Central Africa, where the disease has been around for decades. According to the CDC, more than 1,300 cases have been reported in 31 countries around the world.
Smallpox usually begins with flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. The pain then develops into a painful rash that can spread throughout the body. According to the CDC, most patients recover in two to four weeks without special medical treatment.
However, during the current epidemic, some patients developed rashes on the genitals or anus before noticing flu symptoms, Valensky said. In some cases, patients developed rashes without flu-like symptoms, he said. In most cases, localized rashes do not spread to other parts of the body or to multiple areas, the CDC director said.
According to Valensky, during the current epidemic, people diagnosed with smallpox were in close physical contact with other people infected with the virus. The virus can be spread through direct contact with wounds, body fluids, or materials such as clothing or bedding.
According to Valensky, it is unknown whether the virus is transmitted through semen or vaginal fluid, like a sexually transmitted disease. The CDC also does not know if it can be transmitted from people who are infected but have no symptoms or mild symptoms.
At least 75% of monkeys in the United States have been diagnosed with the virus during international travel. Jennifer McQueiston, official CDC. According to the CDC, the majority of cases were reported among men who had sex with men.
Several patients do not know how to catch smallpox, which indicates a low prevalence of the virus in the United States, McQueen said. But the CDC has not identified any cities or areas in the United States where the epidemic has occurred, he said.
“There are cases where they don’t know how the monkey got the smallpox,” McQueen said. “Maybe they got it from someone who recently traveled, but they’re not sure,” he said.
An epidemic has been reported in Montreal, Canada’s third-largest city, McQueen said. Montreal is located on the border of New York State and New England.
Smallpox can also spread through respiratory droplets when people are in close, constant face-to-face contact, Valensky said. According to Valensky, the virus does not last long in the air or is transmitted for a short period of time in public airspace, such as casual conversation in a grocery store. The monkey thinks that smallpox does not spread by touching the same thing, such as a door handle, for a short time, he said.
Dr. Raj Punjabi heads the White House pandemic preparedness office. The difference is that respiratory droplets fall to the ground quickly, and if the aerosol particles are much smaller, they will remain in the air for a long time, Punjabi said. For example, Covid-19 is spread through aerosol particles, which is one of the reasons for its infectivity.
According to Punjabi, the federal government has ordered 1,400 courses of vaccines and 110 antiviral treatments, for people with monkey smallpox infection. The United States has also conducted 300 tests on a family of viruses, including orthopox and monkeys. When people test positive for orthopox, they are thought to have monkey disease until the CDC in Atlanta confirms the diagnosis.
“We are working to make testing more convenient through public health laboratories and to expand testing beyond public health laboratories through commercial partners,” Panjabi told reporters on Friday.
Down O’Connell, who heads the Department of Health and Human Services, said there are currently 72,000 doses of smallpox vaccine approved in the United States to control smallpox. The Bavarian manufacturer Nordic is still shipping another 300,000 doses to the United States, O’Connell told reporters.
Jynneos is a two-dose vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration to prevent smallpox in people over 18 years of age. The United States also has more than 100 million doses of the ACAM2000 monkey vaccine. Smallpox and smallpox belong to the same family of viruses, but smallpox is much easier.
The CDC generally recommends over Jynneos ACAM2000 because the latter vaccine can have severe side effects. Mackiston said there were not enough doses of Jynneos in the supply chain to vaccinate everyone in the U.S. during a public health emergency in the United States. As a result, the Jynneos vaccine is only being given to people who can benefit more from it, he said. The ACAM2000 vaccine will play a role in vaccinating people who are not at risk of side effects, which will help ensure an adequate supply of ginneos for those in need, he said.
