From white potatoes to tofu, frozen vegetables and even bread: Nutritionist dispels some myths that certain foods are “harmful to you”

A leading Australian nutritionist has revealed his favorite foods, many of which are unhealthy but actually beneficial for you.
Rebecca Govtorn shared a video of her “come to the store with me” with her 155,000 Instagram followers, listing foods that are healthy but still have a bad rap, including white potatoes, frozen vegetables and whole grain breads.
“These dishes have a negative reputation, but they are actually very nutritious!” The Sydney mother wrote the accompaniment.

Sydney nutritionist Rebecca Gavtorn (pictured) has refuted the myth that some “bad” foods, such as bread, potatoes, dried fruit and tofu, are harmful.
The 33-year-old said white potatoes are cooked and chilled, and frozen vegetables are a good source of carbohydrates, nutrients and prebiotics if they are as nutritious as fresh.
White potatoes are often considered one of the most unhealthy vegetables due to their high carbohydrate and starch content, but Rebecca said they are “complete and nutritious”.
“They are a healthy source of carbohydrates and other nutrients and a good source of cooked and refrigerated prebiotics,” he wrote.
Although overcooked bread is not good for you, Rebecca said that all grains have many nutritious benefits.
“Wholemeal bread is an excellent source of slow-burning carbohydrates, rich in nutrients and a good source of fiber for digestion,” he explained.
The 33-year-old nutritionist said that frozen vegetables are a good alternative to fresh produce and that when frozen quickly, they retain almost the same amount of nutrients.
He said traditional dried fruits do not contain sugar as many people think, and canned beans and lentils are “a comprehensive source of vegetable protein, fiber and minerals.”
“Tofu is an excellent source of plant protein and doesn’t change hormones as many say,” Rebecca said.
“Also rich in calcium if you choose to add calcium (look for calcium sulfate 516 in the ingredients).”
Traditional dried fruits, according to Rebecca, do not add sugar and are a good alternative to fresh fruits rich in nutrients.
According to Rebecca, canned lentils and beans are “a very versatile source of vegetable protein, fiber and minerals” and frozen fruits are an excellent substitute for non-seasonal or very expensive fresh fruits.
“They are rich in vitamins, fiber and other beneficial plant compounds,” he said.
Finally, Rebecca dispelled the myth that fresh fruits can be high in sugar and said it would help maintain weight.
“It is a good source of natural sugar along with many other vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants,” he said.
