Low carb diets are better than no diet at all, doctors say

If you are trying to lose weight, the standard advice is to eat less, exercise more and you will lose extra pounds. This weight loss mantra has been told by doctors for decades, so why has obesity increased in the US?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 40% of American adults are obese.

Now, a group of doctors and scientists on obesity claim that calorie restriction can do more harm than good.

“Even if people lose weight in a short period of time, few people can cope with metabolic problems to lose weight without paying attention to hunger,” said Ludwig TODAY.

Instead, Ludwig and his colleagues propose a new approach – what they call the carbohydrate-insulin model. If overeating doesn’t increase obesity, stop counting calories and simply reduce carbs to control your insulin levels.

“Insulin – you might think it’s (the) last fat cell fertilizer. Too much insulin, too many fat cells are programmed to store calories. So there’s not too many calories in the bloodstream. That’s why we’re hungry,” Ludwig said.

Low carb diets have become increasingly popular in recent years. Most include the elimination of refined carbohydrates, including bread, rice and sweets. Instead, the emphasis is on proteins and fats, such as avocados and nuts.

A popular ketogenic diet is an extreme form of limiting carbohydrates from 30 grams to 50 grams per day, which is a problem for many Americans because it contains only 48 grams of carbohydrates per bagel.

However, many studies have shown that low-carbohydrate diets are not only effective but also sustainable.

Jennifer Haynes, 42, said she felt uncomfortable, tired and depressed due to being overweight. He tried to count the calories, including the diet after the diet, but nothing worked because he couldn’t stick to any plan.

Three years ago, he joined a study by Jeff Wolek, a professor of humanities at Ohio State University who has been studying low-carbohydrate diets for 25 years.

After six weeks of a carbohydrate-free diet, Haynes lost 20 pounds[20 kg]. She has now lost a total of 88 pounds since she started her diet plan in 2019.

“In my six-week study, I looked like a completely different person,” he said. “It was wonderful.”

The diet was not easy at first because Haynes was forced to give up his favorite foods, including pasta, bread and potatoes. But seeing the results was the motivation he needed. He called ketone a lifestyle change, not a diet.

Imagining the fat stores in his body before and after the adoption of a new low-carb diet plan showed the difference only six weeks later.

“People respond very well to these diets,” Volek said. “The body responds in a really elegant way. When you limit carbohydrates, your body burns its own fat better because it doesn’t contain a lot of sugar. ”

When people limit their carbohydrates, eat moderate amounts of protein, and follow a proper diet with fat intake, they feel full and naturally limit calories without counting them, Wolek added.

He and his colleagues believe that weight loss is an additional benefit because they often use a low-carbohydrate diet to treat type 2 diabetes.

Volek’s research shows that people who follow a low-carb diet can lose more than 10% of their body weight and maintain it, which Haynes says has changed the game.

“I feel great. It’s easy for me to get up. It’s easy for me to sleep. I feel a lot freer, ”he said.

This new approach also eliminates the stigma surrounding obesity, which is commonly seen as a behavioral problem. Doctors often think that people are overweight because they eat too much or have little willpower. This approach takes the patient’s guilt, treats obesity as a biological problem, and focuses on regulating the hormone insulin.

Volek and his Ohio team are studying the benefits of a low-carbohydrate diet for other diseases and conditions, including some types of cancer, as well as mental health.

Depending on which version of your diet you are following, whether it’s a keto or just a low carb diet, you can still eat a few carbs – it’s just a matter of keeping a close eye on them.
