According to experts, these figures could explain why the UK is experiencing an obesity epidemic, as “there are so many high-calorie foods and very few people know how many calories they contain.”

The data collected by the calorie app MyFitnessPal shows how many calories British people have in their food, which they do not estimate by a third compared to the average actual calories in their database.

For lunch, the British estimated that a jacketed potato with beans had 274 calories, when in fact it had 433 calories.

Those who believe that store-bought Caesar salad is a healthier option may be surprised to find that it has 508 calories, compared to 298 respondents.

A shrimp mayo sandwich and a piece of cheddar cheese are about 100 calories more than the British would expect.

The British have also lost track of the calories in their favorite foods among those who care about their health.

They thought avocados contained 149 calories – less than half the current 322 – and two tablespoons of peanut butter added 107 calories to their daily total, compared to 188 calories.

Respondents believed that 100 g of sweet popcorn contained 289 calories. It actually contains 417.

But the British were a little closer when they thought that salt and vinegar crumbs contained 100 calories, because the average package contains 138 calories.

Respondents underestimated the caloric content of dinner by a quarter, and the steak made of chicken in the restaurant returns 820 calories instead of 1067.

They thought a cheeseburger would have 265 calories when it had 364 calories.

Chocolate brownies, on the other hand, contain almost 600 calories (more than a quarter of the 2,000 daily allowances offered to women) – but the average Briton estimates they have 441 calories.

The UK is one of the fattest countries in Europe, with 63% of adults considered overweight. Obesity is also increasing in children.

Amanda Hamilton, a former BBC TV presenter and nutrition expert, said: “These statistics could help us understand why obesity is so close in the UK.

“There are a lot of high-calorie foods on offer and very few people know how many calories they contain. Unfortunately, most of these calorie-confusing foods are also low on a nutritious scale, so this is twice as much.

Professor Gunter Kunle, an expert in nutrition and food science at the University of Reading, told MailOnline that he was not surprised by the results of the survey.

He said: “It is very difficult to estimate the calories in a food, especially if some“ calories ”are not obvious (e.g. fats in fish and chips).

“I can’t say for sure whether this really explains the increase in obesity – the difficulty of assessing perception has not changed.

The foods selected in the survey may also be foods that are easy to underestimate.

People on a diet (or, of course, those with an eating disorder and a high calorie intake) may be able to evaluate it much better because they know the calorie content better, but I don’t think it can be extrapolated at all. a road.’

Despite the fact that the British are counting calories, almost a third (32 percent) still try to count their daily calories, but instead of checking the labels on seventeen menus.

More than one-fifth of respondents (22 percent) suffered a total loss of weight.
