Capcom Fighting Collection: Is It Worth It?

Many publishers have been betting on remakes and remasters in recent years, and the Capcom Fighting Collection is no different. The collection, which is aimed at martial arts audiences, will touch the hearts of veterans. Everyone who casts their eyes upon it, whether it’s an arcade or an old console, loves it.

On the other hand, newcomers to the niche need to skip more content.

There are ten games at work – in the American and Japanese versions – and even offers players a number of options in filters and resolutions to enjoy the classics, as well as features like training mode, museum and online play. But, of course, this is an experience aimed at those who have experienced or are closely associated with such games. No news.

Note that the Capcom Fighting Collection on the PS5 works backwards compatible with the PS4 version – in other words, don’t expect interaction with DualSense. This is a game of the previous generation, not the current generation. And this is evident in the course of the game.

Capcom Fighting Collection Games

The Capcom Fighting Collection is designed to deliver an updated experience complemented by extras. Ten games were selected to create a line to enrich the collection.

The Darkstalkers series

After appearing on the arcades in 1994, the Darkstalkers series is available in the Capcom Fighting Collection with some surprises. The two games of the franchise were not sold outside of Japan, but were included in the collection. Check up:

  • Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
  • Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge
  • Vampire Savior
  • Vampire Hunter 2 – Not yet available outside of Japan

red earth

If Darkstalkers belongs only to Japan, the situation on Red Earth is completely different. The game has never been released for consoles before, but it will make its debut in addition to the collection and arcades.

Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness

The above is a different fighting game. Mechanical and combat robots called Variant Armors.

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

Anyone who likes the Chibi-version characters, the “cute” representation of the fighters, and is a fan of Street Fighter here feels like they’re well served. However, only when the puzzles are solved in the corner of the screen do the shock exchanges occur.

Hyper Street Fighter II

Hyper Street Fighter II: Anniversary Edition brings together all the characters from previous versions of the franchise. The cast includes the original Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II Turbo fighters.

Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix

Chips will appear in the collection again, but this will break everything in the crossover between the Street Fighter, Darkstalkers and Red Earth franchises – and no puzzles will be released here.

Capcom Fighting Collection game

Capcom has chosen an interesting way to return to war games. Capcom is more organized than Arcade Stadium – mostly on the menu and game plan.

The titles are aligned in the Capcom Fighting Collection and can be enjoyed in both the US and Japanese versions.

Each game has its own control scheme, but they are completely customized. Additionally, in the break menu of some games – this is activated via the DualShock 4 and DualSense touchpad – you can change some items without returning to the character selection screen.

Changes between filters among the available settings leave players with every action they want to see again. Either with a modern look on the full screen, or in the original resolution.

New features make sessions more interesting

Capcom has done well to make the game even more fun with the online multiplayer mode of these classic games. Yes, you can have fun in the daily and rating games in all the titles in the collection.

In addition to games with a reverse network code, which can improve the response to commands sent to the server, you can track the games of your friends in spectator mode.

It is impossible to say very clearly about the quality of communication. The reason for this is simple: in the tests, competitors were not in the same area and found a certain lag.

Training mode

Each of the Capcom Fighting Collection games has training modes, which can be accessed in different ways. The Street Fighter and Darkstalkers series offer a training mode where your commands are displayed on the side of the screen, and in the Red Land you can challenge the title bosses.

The Capcom Fighting Collection has a corner for older fans

Another resource in the collection is the Museum. In this session, the player explores hundreds of official art, concept art, design documents, and unique materials for martial arts. At the same time, 400 songs of the games, including remixes, are waiting for fans of the franchise.

To improve, when players are queuing for a match, you can explore the content available in mode until you find your opponent. If you buy the game in advance, the number of attractions may be even higher. Check up:

  • Knxwledge (6 tracks)
  • Mndsgn (1 track)
  • KEIZOmachine! (1 track)
  • olive oil (1 track)
  • Matt Cub (1 track)

There are no errors during the test

There were no interruptions during the PS5 experience sessions through backward compatibility. On the other hand, unfortunately, Capcom Fighting Collection doesn’t allow you to take screenshots without stopping the game – so we decided to show most of the content in the video.

Capcom Fighting Collection is not enough to conquer a new audience

Games have a more attractive look, responsive management, and competitive online mode, but that may not be enough to attract a new audience. The reason? Other martial arts games on the market, such as Mortal Kombat, Injustice, and Capcom’s Street Fighter V, are more complete.

The delivery of the collection is similar to a remaster. Well done? Yes. But there is nothing innovative that will attract the attention of those who are already working on other proposals. It’s appealing for nostalgia or for a different experience of current “real” games, but with that.

Another thing to note: the menus of the collection are in PT-BR, but the games themselves are not localized for our language – it’s a shame.

Capcom Fighting Collection: Is It Worth It?

If you are a fan of classic games, then this is worth it. The collection delivers works reliably and adds the necessary resources to improve the quality of life of games. Entertain in a nostalgic way through the filters or set the multiplayer mode.

For the general public, consider other options in the platform store. The Capcom Fighting Collection is designed for young people, but titles such as Street Fighter V don’t work as well as they do today.

The game will be available on PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC (via Steam) versions. The release will take place on June 24, 2022.
